Anne here, this is our chicken coop. We built it recently from a great design we found on the web. I will post the link asap. It was pretty simple, we added the lucite windows to the design and lucite roof. So the chickens can get some sunlight and vitamin D. They just started laying their eggs.. It is very exciting

Architectural Coop, Seattle.

This coop in North Seattle was built by Royal @ Urban Arcadia Builders and Designed by Stuart Silk Architects' John Adams. It was an auction item that fetched a pretty penny for the elementary school and resulted in a fancy home for some hens.  I particularly like the varying textures and it's sleek design.

  Describe your perfect client?

-For my business Kippen House, my ideal client is a couple of lovely hens who need a sexy home and a human who enjoys fresh eggs and gardening.  The urban farm movement is gaining momentum in Seattle and a client who understands and has a passion for the many positive results would be my ideal client.




What is your passion?
-I am an unemployed architect...I've been searching for an architecture job for 2 years!  So I guess my passion is with submitting resumes on a regular basis.
Actually, my passion is with a clean, modern design in ANYTHING!  I'm always thinking of ways to make the mundane aesthetically better.  I also enjoy working hands-on to create things.

Where are you from?
-I grew up in Vancouver, Wa and after many travels (20 moves to be exact!) my little family has settled in Seattle.


What was your favorite job?
-My favorite 'job' was being an architecture student.  No creativity limits or budgets!  I also enjoyed my first job as a dishwasher for a cafeteria inside Hewlett Packard!  Yes, dishwasher!  I was the socialite dishwasher.  You'd always find me chatting with HP employees instead of washing the dishes.

Tell us something no one knows about you?
-I have a self-diagnosed, never-discovered-before disorder.  I call it DDD.  Designer Deficit Disorder.  I have so many ideas and projects in my head that I want to do but the ability to focus on one is completely impossible.  Kippen House was conceived 2 years ago and launched this summer.  I'm on a roll and have many more products to add to the line, lets hope I can stay focused!

Well Done Chicken Coop Week; Some of Seattle's Best Coops.

It's on everyone's mind, either their own obsession with their urban chickens and coops OR  wondering why everyone is obsessed with urban chickens and coops. It is undeniable that chickens have gone viral around here and not in a bird-flu kind of way. The case for chickens begins with the basic facts about chickens vs. dogs as pets (sorry Seattle dog people, who are equally as obsessively strange as chicken owners).

Here is my thinking:
Chickens cost $3.99 cents each.  Dogs cost over $200 in adoption fees or thousands to buy a pure bred.
Chickens poop doesn't need to be touched with hands AND is fertilizer. VS Dog poop which needs to be  picked up and disposed of and can be extremely large and warm.
Chickens make cute clucky noises and chit chat . Dogs, well you know...LOUD
Chickens have a life span of 7 years. Dogs can hang around for a loooooong time.
and the obvious one, Chickens produce your breakfast.

With all of this being said,  I would like to show you some chicken coops from Seattle.  What could be better than a well designed coop? This one was designed by a local architect, mama &  gardener.
